Sure, they taste sweet and delicious, but did you know those little berries were so good for you, too?
Strawberries - These little red sweethearts are high in dietary fiber and vitamin C, as well as manganese (an essential trace element that helps keep your physiology functioning), folate (a water-soluble B vitamin), and potassium (a mineral that helps your kidneys, heart, bones, and muscles). Strawberries are also low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium.
Blackberries - Like strawberries, blackberries are low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium. They’re high in dietary fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and folate. They’re also good sources for magnesium (important for healthy bones, heart rhythm, blood sugar levels, and normal blood pressure) and copper (prevents anemia and bone disease and promotes energy production).
Raspberries - Low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium, this aggregate berry is high in potassium, magnesium, manganese, and vitamin C. Despite their small size, one hundred grams of raspberries can provide up to 4% of your daily iron, calcium, and vitamin A (a fat-soluble vitamin that helps with vision, your immune system, skin, as well as reducing your risk of heart disease and cancer). Though many of its calories come from sugars, recent studies suggest that a raspberry has nearly 50% more antioxidants than strawberries.
Blueberries - As Sarah mentioned earlier, blueberries are full of nutritional goodness. They’re low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium, and high in vitamin C, potassium, manganese and dietary fiber. They also have vitamin E and anthocyanins. Anthocyanins give blueberries their distinctive color, but they’re not just for pretty. They’re a natural anti-inflammatory, plus they can promote health in your circulatory system. According to the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, fresh blueberries pack more of an antioxidant punch than many other fresh fruits.
